The association was formed in 1974 and was previously known as AIOPI (Association of Information Officers in the Pharmaceutical Industry).

As part of an initiative to increase healthcare professional reporting of Adverse Drug Reactions, and in collaboration with the IMB, the www.medicines.ie website has been updated to include a specific page on adverse reaction reporting which links directly to the IMB website. Additionally, when the CD-ROM of medicines.ie is distributed in September 08 to all consultants, GPs and pharmacists in Ireland, details of the new adverse reaction reporting initiative will be included.
